What’s WILSON up to with his ART?

01 July 2009

First of all it’s very clear that WILSON is working hard to capture the many impressions of life in Sarawak. The most exciting aspect of working at one of the world’s best kept secrets (The Royal Mulu Resort) is the people that he meets on a daily basis. WILSON is fast becoming at home in this idyllic and exciting part of the world. Recently WILSON had some editorial coverage in Borneo’s Chinese newspaper  ….. and this has had the result that his name is fast becoming well known in throughout Malaysia.

He couldn’t count how many people have commented on how fortunate he is to be working in his ‘Riverside Lounge Studio’ …. and Wilson is the first to agree how well blessed he feels at the opportunity to feel the pulse of the jungle, and to be in this ‘magic’ environment. Just have a look at this wonderful daily view that Wilson enjoys.

Many people have asked if they could catch a glimpse of WILSON’s stage studio.

Well here we have an idea of his work environment. The funny thing is that most artists crave for peace and inspiration …. When asked how he can concentrate whilst on public view …. WILSON quietly answers…. ‘We are all part of the 10,000 things’ …. ‘I love people… and meeting the guests often adds to the inspiration I need to continue with my art on a daily basis. Although WILSON is painting most every day, he has to also sketch his ideas and particularly consider how he can capture the icons that have been requested in a very challenging commission that he has received from the Minister of Tourism. Here is just a few examples of some of the sketches that WILSON has been doing recently.

WILSON has the capacity to create his art in many different mediums and style and that is very much why he has become sought after with his very clear ability to provide his clientele with whatever they require. WILSON would be the first to admit that commissions are the life blood of any artist’s ability to live from his art, whilst some commissions are such that his/her artistic expressions are laboured.

Consider the following initial studies that had to be sketched in order to start to conceptulise the iconic elements throughout Sarawak and to become inspired for his important commission.

The interesting thing is that these studies led to further thoughts on the content of the commissioned work, and at this point in time WILSON is creating a diptych that captures the magic of SARAWAK.
On the comments received thus far from many of the guests at the resort, we are sure that Datuk Michael Manyin will be happy with the final result of WILSON’s inspiration..

When asked about life at the resort …. WILSON has stated that he could spend ten lifetimes in the MULU resort and still only capture a small glimpse of life in the jungle. He stated that for him,  there is a significant benefit in living in the resort and being part of the MULU family, as against roughing it and being as a nomadic warrior in the jungle. ‘I just LOVE MY STUDIO …… it would be too tough trying to work in the true jungle environment.

          Nightly Cultural Dance Show.

WILSON gets most of his inspiration from the local people and also very much from seasoned travelers who share their insights into their impressions of MULU, and in general their ‘Malaysian’ experience. So to summarize, MULU has much to offer through it’s natural beauty which in turn is reflected in the spirit of the local people.  Well it’s back to the easel for WILSON as he begins another month of work at MULU. The coming month will be exciting and at the same time provide the challenge that  WILSON  thrives on.

‘ADIEU’

One of WLSON’s many artworks that has been admired and commented on is a stunning portrait of Igor Stravinsky six month’s before he died from cancer. This work is called ‘ADIEU” and is evidence of WILSON’s ability to capture the soul of his chosen subjects. ‘ADIEU’ is certainly one of WILSON’s masterpieces and would grace the walls of any astute collector of art.. In case you have not yet seen this work here is a small photograph of the work

WILSON’s STUDIO

He loves the blowpipe but certainly enjoys the food that is created for the WildFlower Restaurant by their very competent Food and Beverage team.
WILSON loves his food and has openly admitted that he wishes to continue his residence at the resort.

He also enjoys the entertainment that is provided nightly by the local dance troupe. The guests just love the cultural show.

WILSON has the goal of finishing his commissioned work for the minister of Tourism around the latter part of July and to finish his iconic ‘proboscis’  painting which depicts his insight into the life and spirit of a couple of mature monkeys. He then intends to capture further scenes from nature and from the magnificent vistas of the nearby jungle and to start a commission for a family portrait.

To Be Continued
