WILSON’s ‘ICONIC’ commissioned artwork.

The Minister of Tourism and Urban Development for Sarawak, Datuk Michael Manyin, some months ago gave WILSON a healthy challenge to create an iconic commissioned artwork which would assist in the promotion of Sarawak and help increase  the tourists’ appreciation of the many interesting and unique aspects of life in Sarawak. This work is scheduled for completion by the end of July / early August.

When asked about the work ‘Iconic Sarawak’, WILSON replied that it has been one of the most challenging commissions that he has ever received, and it was vitally important to include as many icons that would assist the minister in his very important overseas tourism presentations on Sarawak.

The painting consists of two (2) panels which highlight the journey from Kuching, to Miri and on to the ‘natural splendour and intrigue of life in the jungle at Mulu. The paintings have certainly been a talking point with many of the visitors, and an opportunity for WILSON to discuss the various ‘iconic’ elements in the work. From the guests’ point of view WILSON’s residency at the resort is an added value, and this is especially so for the Dutch and European tourists who have a great love of art and music. They certainly enjoy the opportunity to talk to WILSON about his various art works on display, and likewise, WILSON has very much enjoyed the contact with the guests.

He has developed the commissioned work so that the Minister can give very graphic comparisons of city and jungle and for example he may choose to compare the following;

·        The concrete ‘jungle’ of the city as against the concrete of the jungle ‘The Pinnacles’ , and the world
            famous ‘Deer Cave’ with the bats.
(the bats are still to be included in the painting)

  • The transport of the city compared to the transport in Mulu

__________________________________________________________________________

  • Parliament Building as against the ‘parliament’ building of the jungle  ‘The Longhouse’

    _____________________________________________________________________

    ·        The busy city life as against the quiet life in the jungle

    WILSON always needs to be working on two or three paintings at a time and in line with ‘Iconic Sarawak’ he is developing an interesting artwork consisting of two (2) ‘Proboscis’ monkeys …. This piece is attracting some insightful comment from the guests at the resort. This is still a work in progress. The title of the painting is ‘You’re Useless!!’

    Time for WILSON to get back to his paintings ……….

             As an artist who has gained international recognition, WILSON looks forward to his paintings
             (his children) being given a new home, and appreciated by their new and satisfied owners. Art is
             such a giving medium, and still recognized as one of the world’s best investments.
